Hobo spider identification — quick visual answer

Hobo spider identification rests on four signs working together. Any single sign produces frequent false positives in the Pacific Northwest, where several look-alike funnel weavers and wolf spiders share the same basements. Use the combination. The first sign is body size: a hobo’s body runs roughly 7–14 mm long, with a leg span of 28–45 mm — somewhere between a pencil eraser and a US quarter. Anything dramatically bigger is almost certainly a giant house spider or a wolf spider. The second is color: hobos are an even, muted brown, without bright bands, stripes, or two-tone contrast. The third is the chevron — a row of light V-shapes or arrowheads running down the top of the abdomen, pointing forward. The fourth is the web: a flat horizontal sheet ending in a small tubular funnel retreat at one corner. Identification checklist

Check each clue below to narrow down what you saw.

  • Body length 7–14 mm (about a pencil eraser to a US dime)

    Adult females reach the upper end of the range; males are slightly smaller and slimmer. Anything noticeably larger is probably a giant house spider or a wolf spider.

  • Brown to grey-brown overall color

    Hobo spiders are an even, muted brown across the cephalothorax and legs. No bright bands, no glossy red, no two-tone body.

  • Light chevron (fishbone) pattern on the abdomen

    The single best field mark. A row of pale V-shapes or arrowheads runs down the top of the abdomen and points forward toward the head.

  • Long, evenly colored legs without strong banding

    Hobo legs are uniform brown. Distinct dark leg bands point you toward the giant house spider or wolf spider instead.

  • Eight eyes in two roughly equal rows

    A six-eye count rules out a hobo and points to a brown recluse. Hobo eyes sit close together near the front of the cephalothorax.

  • Flat sheet web ending in a tubular funnel retreat

    The web is not sticky. It catches prey by detecting vibrations on the sheet, then the spider sprints out from the funnel to grab it.

  • Fast runner on the ground (often mistaken for a wolf spider)

    Hobo spiders are agelenids built for sprinting. When startled they bolt across the floor in short, straight bursts.

  • Mostly found in the Pacific Northwest United States

    Established in WA, OR, ID, western MT, and parts of UT, WY, and southern BC. Outside this range a similar spider is almost always a different species.

A useful quick test: combine the eye count and the chevron. Hobos have eight eyes in two close rows; brown recluses have only six in three pairs. Hobos show a clear chevron pattern; recluses do not. The 1987–2017 hobo spider scare and CDC reversal

No US spider has had a stranger swing in reputation than the hobo. For three decades it sat alongside the brown recluse and the black widow on the CDC’s short list of medically significant species. Public health pamphlets in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho warned residents about necrotic ulcers. By 2017, the CDC quietly removed the hobo from that list. Newer state extension fact sheets followed. The arc is unusual enough to be worth telling in full, because it shapes what current guidance actually says.

The story starts in 1987, when the late Darwin Vest published case reports proposing that hobo spider bites could cause necrotic skin lesions similar to brown recluse bites. The Vest paper appeared in a regional journal, was picked up by clinicians across the Pacific Northwest, and quickly entered medical training materials. The CDC added the hobo to its list of medically significant spiders. For most of the 1990s and 2000s, a worsening necrotic skin wound in Seattle, Portland, or Boise was a credible reason for an emergency-room doctor to suspect a hobo spider bite — even when no spider was ever seen.

The trouble began when other researchers tried to reproduce the original finding. Rick Vetter at UC Riverside, Greta Binford on venom chemistry, and Bennett and Vetter together in a widely cited 2004 Canadian Medical Association Journal review re-examined the case literature. They found three persistent problems. First, the original case reports rarely had a confirmed spider — most patients had a skin lesion and a story. Second, lab studies failed to reproduce necrosis when hobo venom was tested on standard animal models. Third, hobo venom chemistry didn’t contain anything equivalent to sphingomyelinase D, the enzyme largely responsible for recluse necrosis. Without a mechanism and without reproducible lesions, the original claim looked increasingly weak. Many of the necrotic wounds blamed on hobos in the 1990s have since been re-classified as community-acquired MRSA, fungal infections, vasculitis, or other dermatologic conditions.

The 2017 CDC update was deliberately understated — no press release, no policy paper, just a removal of the hobo spider from the list of venomous arthropods. The understatement matters: there was never a dramatic discovery that hobo spiders are safe; there was simply a slow accumulation of evidence that the 1987 claim could not be reproduced. For homeowners in the Pacific Northwest, the practical effect is that a hobo bite is now treated as roughly equivalent to a bee sting — uncomfortable, sometimes locally inflamed, but not life-threatening and not a candidate for the elaborate first-aid steps used for confirmed recluse bites.

Hobo spider anatomy is straightforward agelenid — a funnel-weaver body plan shared with the giant house spider, the grass spider, and several smaller European cousins. The features below are what to look for in a phone photo or under a hand lens. Most of them are visible from above, which is the angle you get when the spider is on the floor or in the bottom of a window well.

  • Cephalothorax

    Front body section. Light brown with a darker central stripe or two faint stripes running back from the eyes. Holds the eight eyes, the chelicerae, and the bases of all eight legs.

  • Abdomen with chevron pattern

    Oval and slightly hairy. The top surface carries a row of light V-shaped (chevron) marks that point forward — sometimes described as a 'fishbone.' The pattern fades on faded or worn adults.

  • Eyes (8 in two rows)

    Eight small eyes sit in two rows of four near the front of the cephalothorax. The arrangement is roughly even — not divided into pairs or dyads. Most agelenids share this layout.

  • Chelicerae (fangs)

    Short paired downward-curving fangs at the front of the head. They are large enough to pierce thin skin but not long enough to reliably puncture thick clothing or hardened calluses.

  • Pedipalps

    Small leg-like appendages by the mouth. Adult males develop swollen tips on the palps used for sperm transfer — a quick way to sex a hobo seen in late summer.

  • Legs (8, long and slender)

    All eight legs are long, evenly brown, and roughly equal in length. The leg-span on a mature female reaches 28–45 mm — about the diameter of a US quarter.

  • Spinnerets

    A pair of long, prominent spinnerets projects from the rear of the abdomen. They are visible from above and help spin the sheet of the funnel web.

  • Tarsal claws

    Three small claws at the tip of each leg, typical of web-building spiders. They grip the silk threads of the sheet web without slipping.

The two anatomical features that catch out identifiers most often are the chevron pattern and the eye row. The chevron is a row of light arrowheads down the top of the abdomen, pointing forward toward the head. On a fresh adult it is clear; on a faded or older specimen it can wash out almost entirely, leaving a uniform brown abdomen that looks more like a sac spider. The eight eyes sit in two roughly equal rows near the front of the cephalothorax. Most identification mistakes come from people who never check the eye count — a quick zoomed phone photo solves the question in seconds and rules out brown recluse (six eyes) immediately.

Hobo spider web — the funnel

The hobo spider web is the most distinctive feature most homeowners actually see. It is a flat horizontal sheet of silk, usually 20–60 cm across, with a small tubular funnel retreat tucked into one corner. The sheet is not sticky. It catches prey by detecting vibrations — when a beetle, fly, or sowbug walks across the top of the sheet, the spider feels the disturbance, sprints out of the funnel, grabs the prey, and drags it back into the retreat to feed. Web architecture and prey-capture strategy are the same in close relatives like the giant house spider and the grass spider, which is part of why those species get confused with hobos so often.

Indoors, hobo webs gather in low corners — at the base of basement walls, in the bottom of window wells, behind appliances, along the floor of garages, and in storage areas where there’s dust on the floor and few feet to disturb it. Outdoors, they appear in woodpiles, under decks, in retaining-wall crevices, and across low ground cover. The webs are easiest to see at dawn when dew clings to the silk and turns the sheets bright white against a dark background — entomologists in the Pacific Northwest sometimes survey hobos by counting glowing sheets in early-morning lawns.

A useful rule: any flat horizontal sheet with a small funnel at one corner is an agelenid web. In the Pacific Northwest, the candidates are hobo spider, giant house spider, and grass spider. The species checks below tell you which.

Hobo spider behavior

Hobo spiders are sit-and-wait predators with a sprint-on-trigger response. Most of the time, the spider sits at the mouth of its funnel retreat with the front legs touching the sheet. When prey lands on the sheet, the vibration travels through the silk to the spider, which sprints out — fast, in a straight line — grabs the prey, and drags it back into the funnel. The whole sequence takes a second or two. Outside of prey capture, hobos are conservative: they spend most of their lives within a few centimeters of their retreat, conserve energy, and only abandon a web when it becomes unrepairable.

Two behaviors generate most of the “hobo in my house” reports. The first is the late-summer male wander. In August and September, adult males leave their webs and roam widely looking for receptive females. They’re fast, they’re ground-level, and they end up indoors more often during these two months than at any other time of year. A spider sprinting across a hardwood floor in late summer in Seattle is statistically likely to be a wandering male hobo or a wandering male giant house spider. The second is bathtub stranding — agelenids fall into smooth ceramic basins overnight and can’t climb out. By morning the spider is sitting in the bottom of the tub, exhausted and easy to scoop into a jar.

Hobos are also fast on the ground — about 30 cm per second in short bursts — which is why people frequently mistake them for wolf spiders. Both run; wolf spiders are larger, hairier, and don’t use webs at all. Both species avoid humans, neither chases or jumps, and both flee disturbance rather than confront it.

Hobo spider life cycle

Hobo spiders live 1–2 years. The cycle runs roughly in step with the Pacific Northwest seasons. Egg sacs are produced in late summer and fall — flat, papery, lens-shaped disks containing 50–100 eggs each, attached to a substrate near the maternal web. The female guards the sac through fall, then dies as temperatures drop. Spiderlings hatch in spring, disperse over a few meters from the sac, and start building small sheet webs in low ground cover. Most spiderlings never reach adulthood — weather, predators, and competition thin them aggressively in the first summer.

The survivors molt several times through their first summer and fall, growing through juvenile and sub-adult stages and developing the chevron pattern. Females reach sexual maturity by their second summer — roughly one year after hatching — and may live a second year and produce one or more egg sacs. Males reach maturity slightly earlier, abandon their webs in late summer to wander for mates, and rarely survive their first winter. The late-summer male-wander season is when most indoor hobo encounters happen and when most documented hobo bites occur, because wandering males are the ones that end up in shoes, gloves, and bedding.

Where hobo spiders live — Pacific Northwest geography

The hobo spider is native to Europe — it lives across most of the continent in fields, hedgerows, and along buildings. The species was almost certainly introduced to Seattle by shipping in the 1930s, with the earliest confirmed Pacific Northwest specimens collected around 1936. From Seattle, hobos spread inland and southward over the following decades, riding cargo and following the rail-and-highway network. Today the established North American range covers most of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, western Montana, and parts of Utah, Wyoming, and southern British Columbia. Outside that range, established breeding populations are essentially absent.

The state-by-state status above reflects published entomology research from Washington State University, Oregon State University, the University of Idaho, the University of California Riverside, and the American Arachnological Society. A spider that looks like a hobo but lives outside the Pacific Northwest is almost always a different species — most often a grass spider (Agelenopsis) elsewhere in North America, which is in the same family, builds similar webs, and carries similar coloration but has bold dark stripes on the cephalothorax and longer spinnerets.

Hobo spider invasion biology — and the giant house spider

The hobo spider is an invasive species in North America, but it is being invaded right back. Beginning in the late 1990s, populations of the giant house spider (Eratigena atrica) — a closely related European cousin — began expanding through the Pacific Northwest. Field surveys in Seattle, Portland, and Vancouver BC have documented declines in hobo populations in homes where giant house spiders are abundant. The two species share the same indoor harborage, the same funnel-web architecture, and the same prey base. The giant house spider is larger and apparently outcompetes the hobo for those resources. In some PNW homes, the “hobo problem” of the 1990s has become a giant-house-spider problem in the 2020s.

The irony is hard to miss. For thirty years, public-health messaging treated the hobo as a serious medical threat — and during the same period, a harmless larger cousin quietly displaced it in the very homes the public was worried about. Both species are now confirmed to be largely harmless. The giant house spider was never on a venomous-spider list. The hobo came off in 2017. Pacific Northwest residents who used to fear hobos in their basements are now finding either smaller numbers of hobos, larger numbers of giant house spiders, or both. Neither needs to be feared, and removing them tends to make harborage available for the next colonist. Sealing gaps and reducing clutter works better than killing.

Hobo spider vs brown recluse

The most common hobo spider misidentification is brown recluse. Both are tan-brown medium-sized spiders, both can show up indoors, and both have ended up on venomous-spider lists at some point in modern history. But they live in nearly non-overlapping ranges, they have a different number of eyes, and they build very different webs. Geography settles most cases on its own. In the Pacific Northwest, a chevron-back spider with eight eyes is a hobo or giant house spider, almost never a recluse — brown recluses are not established in WA, OR, ID, or BC. Hobo spider vs giant house spider (Eratigena atrica)

The giant house spider is the hobo’s closest North American look-alike — same genus (Eratigena), same family (Agelenidae), same funnel-web architecture, same Pacific Northwest range, often the same basement. Most “hobo spider” sightings in PNW homes are actually giant house spiders. The species name atrica means “dark” or “black,” which fits — giant house spiders are consistently larger, darker, and more boldly patterned than hobos.

Both species are now considered harmless, so identification matters more for curiosity than for safety. A quick body-size check usually settles it: bodies bigger than 13 mm with bold leg banding are giant house spiders; bodies in the 7–14 mm range with even brown legs and a fainter chevron are hobos. Hobo spider vs grass spider (Agelenopsis)

The grass spider is the third member of the funnel-weaver lookalike trio. Grass spiders are in the same family (Agelenidae) but a different genus (Agelenopsis), and they live across much more of North America than hobos do — including most of the Midwest, South, and East Coast. Outside the Pacific Northwest, a spider with a chevron-ish pattern and a funnel web is almost certainly a grass spider, not a hobo.

The single fastest tell is spinneret length. Grass spiders have very long, finger-like spinnerets that project clearly behind the abdomen — visible without a hand lens in most photos. Hobo spinnerets are shorter and less conspicuous. The second tell is habitat: grass spiders are outdoor lawn specialists, hobos are indoor and ground-cover specialists. Add the cephalothorax stripes, and the two species are easy to separate even on a fuzzy phone photo.
