The types of bees you are most likely to see
Twenty thousand species sounds unmanageable, and it is not how identification actually works. Almost every bee a person meets in North America belongs to one of a handful of groups, and each has a giveaway.

Three of those have a full guide of their own here. Something big and shiny black near timber is a carpenter bee. Something tiny landing on your arm in hot weather is a sweat bee. Holes in the lawn rather than in wood means ground bees.

What to look at on a bee
Work through these in order. The first two usually settle it, and the rest confirm.
Narrowing down what you saw
Check each clue below to narrow down what you saw.
Is the abdomen furry or bare?
A shiny, hairless black abdomen points at a carpenter bee. Furry with yellow bands points at a bumble bee.
How big is it, against a fingernail?
Under a quarter inch is a sweat bee or similar. Half an inch is a honey bee. Three quarters to an inch is a bumble or carpenter bee.
Where was it, flowers or structure?
Bees working flowers are foraging. Bees hovering at wood, or low over bare soil, are near a nest.
Is there a hole nearby, and in what?
A round half-inch hole in wood means a carpenter bee. Many quarter-inch holes in dry soil mean ground bees.
What colour is it really?
Metallic green or blue is almost always a sweat bee. Golden brown and fuzzy is a honey bee. Black and yellow bands are bumble bees.
Is the waist pinched?
A narrow, obvious waist and a smooth shiny body mean a wasp rather than a bee.
Does it have pollen on it, and where?
A packed lump on the hind leg is a honey or bumble bee. Dry pollen dusted under the belly is a leafcutter or mason bee.

Bee or wasp?
Worth settling early, because a large share of insects reported as bees are wasps, and the two behave very differently around people.

How a bee carries pollen, and why it helps you identify it
This is an underrated field mark, because pollen is usually visible and it splits the common bees cleanly into two groups.
- A packed, shiny lump on the hind leg. That is a corbicula, or pollen basket, a smooth concave plate found on honey bees and bumble bees. The pollen is moistened and pressed into a solid pellet, often bright orange or yellow.
- Loose dry pollen on brushy hairs. That is a scopa. Mining bees and sweat bees carry it on the hind legs, and leafcutter and mason bees carry it under the abdomen, which makes their bellies look dusted with gold.
So a bee with a neat pellet on each leg is almost certainly a honey bee or a bumble bee. A bee that looks powdered underneath is a Megachile or Osmia, and nothing in a hive looks like that.
Some bees also buzz pollinate, gripping a flower and vibrating their flight muscles hard enough to shake pollen loose. Bumble bees, sweat bees and several solitary groups can do it. Honey bees cannot, which is why tomatoes and blueberries are pollinated better by wild bees than by hives.
The six families of bees
Every bee sits in one of six families. Most people never need this, but it explains why bees that look nothing alike keep getting grouped together.

Social bees and solitary bees
This is the single most useful reframing on the page. Only about 5% of bee species are social. The hive that everyone pictures belongs to a small minority, and the other 95% are solitary females working entirely alone. Bees sit in the order Hymenoptera alongside wasps and ants, and truly eusocial behaviour, with a queen and sterile workers, is rare across the whole group. The western honey bee, Apis mellifera, is the species that made it famous.
A solitary female digs or finds her own nest, stocks each cell with pollen, lays an egg on it, seals it and moves on. She never meets her offspring. There is no queen, no workers, no honey store and nothing collective to defend, which is exactly why most bees are so reluctant to sting.
So the mental model of bees as hive creatures is backwards. It describes the exception. If you want the rule, picture a lone female in a hole in the ground.
The three types of bees in a colony
The other thing people mean by types of bees is the three castes inside a honey bee hive. This applies to honey bees and, loosely, to bumble bees. It does not apply to the solitary majority above.

The drone is the detail worth carrying away, because it generalises. Male bees of every species lack a stinger, which is why a bee behaving boldly is so often harmless.
Do all bees sting, make honey, or live in hives?
No to all three, and the pattern behind the answers is the useful part. Almost nothing people believe about bees is true of bees generally. It is true of honey bees, which are one species out of twenty thousand.
- Do all bees sting? No. Males never can, since the stinger is a modified ovipositor, the tube used for laying eggs. Many solitary females have stings too weak to pierce skin.
- Do all bees make honey? Almost none. Only honey bees and a few stingless species store surplus. Solitary bees store pollen for their young instead.
- Do all bees live in hives? About 5% do. The rest nest alone in soil, wood or hollow stems.
- Are all bees female? No, though every bee that can sting is. Males exist throughout and simply cannot sting.
- Do all bees die after stinging? Only honey bees, and only on mammal skin, where the barbed sting anchors and tears free.

How many types of bees are there?
Over 20,000 known species worldwide, of which about 4,000 are native to the United States, according to USGS. The range within that is extraordinary. The smallest, Perdita minima, measures about 2 millimetres and is easily mistaken for a gnat. Some United States carpenter bees are roughly the size of a kumquat. So a very small bee on a flower is not necessarily a young one. Bees emerge at full adult size, and a small bee is simply a small species.
The count is also unfinished. USGS estimates that around 10% of United States bee species have not yet been named or described. Many are smaller than a grain of rice, which is part of why they have gone unrecorded.
The bee everyone pictures is not native
Honey bees were brought to North America from Europe in the 17th century. The bee that appears on every jar, poster and warning sign is an introduced species, and the 4,000 native bees were here long before it.
That matters beyond trivia. A native pollinator is the primary insect pollinator of agricultural plants across most of the country. For crops that evolved in the Americas, such as squash, blueberries and cranberries, native bees often outperform honey bees. The blue orchard bee is a better apple pollinator than a hive.
So a lawn full of small ground nesting bees is not a lesser version of a beehive. It is the older and, in many places, the more important arrangement.
