Is your big black bee a carpenter bee?
Most people arrive here having seen something large, dark, and loud near a deck or a fence. They search for a big black bee, a black bee, or a wood bee. All three names usually point at the same insect, the carpenter bee, and the quickest confirmation is not the bee at all. It is where the bee is.
- It hovers near wood, not flowers. Decks, railings, eaves, fascia boards, fence posts, playsets.
- It hangs in one spot in mid air, then darts off and returns to the same patch of air.
- The abdomen looks polished. Black, bare, and shiny, like a bead.
- There are round holes nearby, about half an inch across, often with sawdust below them.
The sound is a cue too. Carpenter bees produce a deep, loud, low-pitched buzz that carries further than a honey bee's. UC IPM lists that noise, along with their size, as one of the main reasons people find them frightening. A bee you can hear from across the garden is usually this one.

What a carpenter bee looks like
Carpenter bees belong to the genus Xylocopa, which holds roughly 500 species worldwide. The common eastern species is Xylocopa virginica. Alongside bumble bee queens, they are among the largest native bees in the United States.
UC IPM puts females at 5/8 to 1 inch long, shiny black, sometimes with a metallic blue sheen. The thorax, the middle section, is furry and often yellow, orange, or white depending on species. The abdomen is the giveaway. It is bare and glossy where a bumble bee is furry.
Males and females, and the patch on the face
This is the single most useful detail on the page, and almost nobody publishes it. Male eastern carpenter bees have a pale or white patch on the face. Females have an all black face. So if you can see a light spot between the eyes, you are looking at a bee that physically cannot sting you.
Males are also the ones behaving badly. They hold a territory and investigate anything that enters it, which is why one seems to chase you. Females spend their time boring and provisioning, and they are far less visible.
Carpenter bee vs bumble bee
Plenty of guides say bumble bees are smaller. That is not reliable, and it sends people to the wrong answer. Bumble bees run about 0.5 to 1 inch and carpenter bees about 5/8 to 1 inch, so the two overlap almost completely. Size will not settle it. The abdomen will.

Do carpenter bees sting?
Short answer: males cannot sting at all, and females can but hardly ever do. For an insect this large and this confrontational, carpenter bees are remarkably harmless. UC IPM puts it plainly, noting that males cannot sting and females sting only when provoked or handled roughly.
So are carpenter bees dangerous? Not to people, beyond the ordinary risk any sting carries for someone with a venom allergy. They carry no disease, they do not bite, and they have no interest in food, bins, or picnic tables. Why the one dive-bombing you is harmless
A stinger is a modified ovipositor, the tube an insect lays eggs through. Males never had one, so no male bee of any species can sting. The carpenter bee that hovers at head height, flies at your face, and chases you down the path is defending territory with the only tool he has, which is nerve.
He will also chase other males, wasps, birds, and small thrown objects. Watching one try to intimidate a pebble is the quickest way to stop worrying about him. Look for the pale face patch and you have your confirmation.
The encounter reads as an attack because of how he flies. He comes straight at your face, stops dead about a foot away, holds there, then swings around behind you. Nothing else in a garden behaves quite like that, so people reasonably read it as aggression. What he is doing is checking whether you are a rival male or a female, and he has no way to ask.
The practical response is to keep walking. Territory boundaries are small, usually a few yards around the nest site, so he gives up as soon as you cross out of it. Swatting achieves nothing and makes you more interesting. Carpenter bees have no alarm pheromone system that calls in reinforcements, unlike honey bees, so a single annoyed bee stays a single annoyed bee.
If a female does sting you
A female will sting if you grab her, sit on her, or trap her inside clothing. Her stinger is smooth rather than barbed, so it pulls out cleanly and she survives, which means she can sting more than once. Honey bees are the ones that die after stinging.
The sting itself is painful but unremarkable, broadly comparable to a honey bee sting, and it carries no special venom. Because most people go a lifetime without being stung by one, there is very little folklore about it, which is itself a reasonable measure of how rarely it happens.

The nest, and what the holes tell you
A female bores a hole that looks machine made. It is close to a perfect circle, about half an inch across, and it runs straight in for an inch or so before turning sharply, usually about 90 degrees, to follow the grain. That right angle is characteristic.
Inside, she builds a line of brood chambers. Each one gets a ball of pollen and nectar, one egg, and a partition of chewed wood pulp sealing it off. UC IPM gives typical tunnels as 6 to 10 inches deep, and Clemson notes fresh galleries often run 4 to 6 inches. Outside, look for coarse sawdust on the ground and a yellowish stain streaking down the wood below the entrance.
Carpenter bee holes vs other wood pests
This is where most identification goes wrong, because four different pests damage timber and only one leaves a large round hole. The hole itself is diagnostic.

The rule of thumb: one big round hole means bees, many tiny holes mean beetles, no holes but mud tubes means termites, and no holes but coarse frass with insect parts means ants. Termites are the only one of the four that actually eats wood.
How bad is carpenter bee damage really?
Less bad than the pest control adverts suggest, and worse than a single hole looks. UC IPM says carpenter bees create galleries that can weaken structures but rarely cause severe damage. One season of tunnelling in a deck rail is cosmetic.
The problem is reuse. Excavating fresh wood is expensive work, so bees return to old tunnels, clean them out, and extend them. Galleries that start at 4 to 6 inches have been measured at up to 10 feet after years of this. A board with one visible hole can hold a surprising amount of tunnelling.
Why woodpeckers make it much worse
Here is the part that turns a cosmetic problem into a repair bill. Woodpeckers hear the larvae moving inside the galleries and chisel the wood open to eat them. A neat half inch bee hole can become a gouge several inches wide. In many cases the woodpecker damage is the reason a board has to be replaced, not the bees.
The carpenter bee year
There is only one generation a year across most of the country, which is why the activity arrives in a burst and then vanishes.

That calendar matters for anyone planning to do something about them, because treating a sealed brood chamber in midsummer achieves very little. The partitions keep dust and spray away from the developing bees, and they simply chew out later.
Which woods carpenter bees choose
They want soft, bare, weathered wood. UC IPM lists southern yellow pine, white pine, California redwood, cedar, Douglas fir and cypress, along with mimosa, mulberry, ash and pecan. They avoid most hardwoods.
Paint is the strongest deterrent, because a solid painted surface is difficult for them to start on. Bare, stained, or weathered timber is the vulnerable kind, which is why decks, fence rails, playsets, wooden siding, and the undersides of eaves and soffits take the most damage.
Species you might actually see
- Eastern carpenter bee (Xylocopa virginica). The common one across the eastern and central states, black with a yellow furry thorax.
- Valley carpenter bee (Xylocopa varipuncta). Western. The female is glossy black, and the male is a striking golden brown, so unlike her that people assume they are different insects.
- Southern carpenter bee (Xylocopa micans). Smaller, with a metallic blue green sheen that reads as a blue bee in sunlight.
- Mountain carpenter bee. A smaller western species, often shinier and darker.
So a blue carpenter bee is not a separate kind of insect doing something different. It is the same genus with a different finish, and it behaves identically.
Are carpenter bees good for anything?
They are native pollinators, and UC IPM classes them as beneficial insects. Their size lets them work large flowers that smaller bees struggle with, and they visit a wide range of garden and crop plants.
Some of them also buzz pollinate. The bee grips a flower and vibrates its flight muscles hard enough to shake pollen loose, which is the only way certain plants release it. Tomatoes, peppers, eggplants and blueberries all respond to that treatment, and honey bees cannot do it at all.
Then there is the cheating, which is genuinely interesting. Carpenter bees often practise nectar robbing, slitting the base of a deep flower to drink the nectar without going past the pollen. The plant gets nothing from that visit. So the same bee is part pollinator and part thief, depending which flower it lands on.
Getting rid of carpenter bees
Worth deciding whether you need to. UC IPM recommends prevention over insecticide and notes that under most conditions chemical control is not warranted. In short: paint the bare wood, treat active tunnels with dust at night, and wait about a day before plugging anything.
