What we provide
The Bug Identifier offers a free AI bug and insect identifier plus written identification guides. Everything here is informational. Photo identification genuinely helps, but it gives you a suggestion rather than a verdict. That is exactly why every result carries a confidence level.
Treat a result as a starting point. Where the answer matters, such as a spider you suspect is medically significant or an infestation affecting your home, confirm it with a qualified professional.
What we do not provide
- Medical advice. Nothing here diagnoses or treats any condition. For a bite or sting that is worsening, blistering, or accompanied by fever or breathing difficulty, contact a doctor or emergency services rather than a website.
- Pest control services. We are not exterminators and we do not visit properties. For an active infestation, or any spider you believe is dangerous, contact a licensed professional in your area.
- Legal or regulatory advice. Pesticide rules and tenancy obligations vary by country and region. Check local requirements before acting.
- Guaranteed accuracy. Species identification from a single photograph has real limits. Some species cannot be separated without a microscope, and immature insects often cannot be identified at all.
Photos you upload
You keep ownership of any photo you upload. By uploading one you give us permission to process it for the single purpose of returning your identification result. We do not store your photos afterwards, and we do not use them for anything else. Our privacy policy covers the detail.
Please only upload images you have the right to use, and avoid images containing people, documents, or anything private. The tool is for photographs of insects and spiders.
Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- Scrape, bulk-download, or systematically copy the content on this site.
- Automate requests to the identifier, or attempt to bypass the daily usage limits.
- Republish or resell our guides, in whole or in substantial part, as your own.
- Upload unlawful content, or anything designed to disrupt the service.
- Attempt to gain unauthorised access to any part of the site or its infrastructure.
We may restrict access if the service is being abused, in order to keep it free and working for everyone else.
Content and intellectual property
The written guides, comparison tables, illustrations, and site design are the property of The Bug Identifier unless credited otherwise. You are welcome to link to any page and to quote a short passage with attribution and a link. Reproducing whole guides is not permitted.
We cite university extension services, the CDC, the EPA, and similar bodies. Those organisations own their own material, so we link to it rather than copy it.
Advertising
Advertising through Google AdSense pays for this site. We label ads and keep them out of the content itself. We never accept payment to change an identification, a safety rating, or a recommendation. The editorial policy explains how that separation works.
Links to other sites
We link to outside resources, mostly university and government sources. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content or their privacy practices.
Disclaimer and liability
The service is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, express or implied. We do not warrant that identifications will be accurate or that the site will be uninterrupted or error-free.
To the fullest extent permitted by law, The Bug Identifier is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential loss arising from use of the site, including decisions made on the basis of an identification result. Nothing in these terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded.
Changes
We may update these terms as the site develops. The date at the top shows the current version, and continuing to use the site after a change means you accept it.
