What kind of bug is this? Six checks that name most bugs
To identify a bug, work through six features in a set order: leg count, body shape, wings, color and markings, size, and the spot you found it in. Leg count goes first, because it splits the whole field in one step. Six legs plus antennae means an insect. Eight legs and no antennae means a spider or a mite. More than eight legs means a centipede or a millipede.
After the legs, body shape does the next most work. Flat and oval suggests a bed bug or a beetle, while long and thin suggests a silverfish, an earwig, or a fly. Then wings, color, and size trim what is left. Finally the room decides between the last two or three candidates, since most household species stick to one kind of space. Six answers, and most bugs have a name.

What are these bugs? The answers people land on most
When people ask what these bugs are, the answer is usually one of about a dozen species. Tiny black specks in the kitchen are normally carpet beetles, springtails, or small ants. Pale dots on a damp bathroom wall are almost always booklice. Bright red pinpoints on a window sill in spring are clover mites. Small pale insects clustered on plant stems are aphids or mealybugs.
Seeing several bugs at once changes the reading, though. One bug indoors is often a stray that wandered in under a door. Several of the same bug in the same spot usually means they are breeding nearby, so the room matters more than the individual. What insect is this, and is it even an insect?
Before naming a species, check whether this insect is an insect at all. A true insect has six legs, three body sections, one pair of antennae, and often two pairs of wings. Ants, beetles, flies, moths, roaches, fleas, and booklice all pass that test. Spiders, mites, ticks, and harvestmen fail it, because they carry eight legs, two body sections, and no antennae at all.
The check matters because it changes what works next. Insect sprays often do little to mites, and spider advice will not help you with a beetle. What type of bug is this if it has wings?
A winged bug indoors is usually a fly, a gnat, a moth, a winged ant, or a beetle. Count the wings you can actually see. One clear pair means a fly or a gnat, since flies keep only the front pair. Two pairs that fold flat over the back means a winged ant or a termite. Dusty, furry wings mean a moth. A hard shell that splits down the middle means a beetle, and its flying wings sit folded underneath.
Wings also date the bug for you. Winged ants and termites only fly during a mating swarm, so a sudden indoor cloud of them points to a colony in or near the building. Ants have a pinched waist and elbowed antennae, while termites are straight-sided with beaded antennae. That difference is worth getting right, because only one of the two eats structural timber.

How can you identify a bug by the way it moved?
Movement is the clue people remember best, and it is genuinely diagnostic. Nobody recalls how many antennal segments something had. Everybody recalls that it shot across the floor, or that it dropped and played dead. Each of those behaviors belongs to a short list of species, so the way a bug moved can name it even when you never got a proper look.

Does this bug bite, and is it dangerous?
Most household bugs do not bite people at all. Carpet beetles, springtails, booklice, silverfish, drain flies, aphids, and fungus gnats have no interest in skin and no way to break it. The indoor bugs that really do bite or sting make a short list: bed bugs, fleas, mosquitoes, a few ant species, and occasionally a spider that you press against your own skin by accident.
Biting and danger are separate questions, though. A wolf spider bite hurts but stays minor, while a black widow or brown recluse bite needs medical care. Meanwhile several non-biting bugs still cause trouble, because carpet beetle bristles irritate skin and airways and dust mite waste sets off asthma. The bug is gone. What did it leave behind?
You do not need the insect to name the insect. Most household species leave evidence that is more reliable than a half-second glimpse, and in the case of bed bugs the evidence usually turns up first anyway.

Shed skins are the single most useful find, because they hold the body shape after the insect has gone. If you can photograph the skin, the identifier reads it much like the live bug. That is the one case where identifying by picture still works with no bug present.
How big was it? Judging size from memory
Size separates species that otherwise sound identical, and almost nobody measures a bug before it escapes. Compare it to something you were holding instead.
