How to identify tiny white bugs in 10 seconds
Three questions settle nearly every case. Does it move? Does it jump? And can you see a shape, or only a speck?
Still white specks glued into mattress seams are bed bug eggs. Something that jumps erratically is a springtail. A pale soft insect scurrying on damp paper or a bathroom wall is a booklouse. And anything too small to have a visible shape, moving like dust, is a mite.

White mites, and which one you actually have
“White mite” is a description rather than a species, and four different mites get called that. Telling them apart is easy once you know that each one lives somewhere specific.

All four are under 0.5 mm, which matters practically. At that size you cannot see legs or a body shape, so what you notice is movement rather than an animal. A pale drift that shifts slightly when you look closely is almost always mites.
Mites are arachnids and have eight legs as adults, unlike the six-legged insects elsewhere on this page. You will not be able to count them without magnification, but it explains why mites and springtails behave so differently despite looking similar at a glance.
A fifth meaning: spider mites, and why the advice flips
Some pest guides use “white mites” for the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), whose pale forms do look whitish. That matters, because the fix is the opposite of the one above.
Grain mites, mould mites, and booklice all need high humidity, so drying a room out removes them. Spider mites are the reverse. They thrive in hot, dry air and their numbers collapse when humidity rises, which is why misting an affected plant is standard advice. So before you change the humidity, work out which one you actually have.
The tell is location. Spider mites live on plant leaves and spin fine webbing on the undersides. Grain and mould mites live in food and damp corners and spin nothing. Full detail is in our spider mites guide.
Tiny white bugs that look like dust or lint
This is one of the most common descriptions, and it splits neatly in two depending on where you found it.
Looks like moving dust means mites, almost every time. Grain mites in an opened packet and mould mites on a damp wall both form pale drifts that only reveal themselves as alive when you watch closely. A torch held at a low angle makes the movement much easier to see.
Looks like lint or cotton means something waxy instead. On a plant, that is a mealybug, which coats itself in white wax for protection. Drifting through the air outdoors, it is a woolly aphid, whose waxy filaments make it look like a floating scrap of fluff. In a wardrobe, small cream cases stuck to wool are clothes moth larvae.
Tiny white bugs in houseplant soil
Springtails account for nearly all of these. They live in the top layer of wet potting soil, feed on fungi and decaying matter, and jump when you disturb the surface. They do not eat roots and do not harm the plant in any way.
What they do tell you is that the soil is staying too wet, which is a genuine problem for the plant even though the springtails are not. Treat them as a moisture gauge. Let the top inch dry out fully between waterings and the population collapses within a couple of weeks without any treatment.
Two other soil finds are worth separating. Fungus gnat larvae are pale and thread-like but stay under the surface, and the adults are the small dark flies hovering above the pot. Root mealybugs look like white specks on the roots themselves, visible only when you tip the plant out of its pot.
Small white flying bugs and fuzzy white bugs
Three things fly and read as white, and one of them matters far more than the others.
- Whiteflies rise in a small cloud when you brush a plant, then resettle on the leaf undersides. They are sap feeders and leave sticky honeydew.
- Woolly aphids drift through still air outdoors, looking like tiny flying tufts of cotton. They are harmless and often mistaken for seeds or ash.
- Termite alates are the one to take seriously. A swarm of pale winged insects indoors, usually in spring and often at a window, can mean an active colony in the structure.
Tiny white bugs on skin or in hair
Start by working out whether there is actually an insect present. Springtails and booklice sometimes land on skin, but neither bites and neither stays. Brushing them off is the whole treatment.
If nothing is visible and the itching is worst at night, particularly between the fingers, at the wrists, and around the waist, that pattern fits scabies. The mite burrows under the skin and leaves thin raised lines. It is not something to treat with household insecticide, and it does need a doctor, since the treatment is prescription only.
For hair, one distinction saves a lot of worry. Head lice are greyish-tan rather than white, and their eggs are cemented to the hair shaft so firmly that they will not brush off. Loose white flecks that lift away easily are far more likely to be dandruff or product residue.
Do tiny white bugs bite?
Almost none of them do. Booklice, springtails, mealybugs, whiteflies, aphids, grain mites, and mould mites all lack the mouthparts to break human skin. They feed on mould, plant sap, or decaying matter, and none has any reason to approach a person.
The exceptions are narrow. Scabies mites burrow into skin, which is a medical rather than a pest problem. Bird and rodent mites will bite people when their host nest is nearby, though they read as pale grey rather than white. Dust mites never bite at all, but their waste is a leading indoor allergy trigger, which is why people wrongly blame them for bites.

Why damp causes tiny white bugs
Nearly every white bug on this list is really a moisture indicator, and understanding why makes them much easier to prevent.
Booklice, mould mites, and grain mites do not eat paper, plaster, or flour directly. They eat the microscopic mould that grows on those surfaces once relative humidity passes roughly 60%. No mould means no food, which is why these species vanish so quickly when a room dries out. Hold the room at 50% and the population is gone in two to three weeks. Springtails work the same way, feeding on fungi in wet soil.
That explains the pattern people notice. These bugs appear in new-build homes that are still drying, in bathrooms with weak ventilation, in basements after heavy rain, and in cupboards against cold external walls. Reaching for a spray treats the symptom. A dehumidifier and better airflow treat the cause.
White bugs on plants
White bugs on plants are a separate group from the ones on your walls and shelves, and the treatment is different for each species. Four turn up on houseplants far more than the rest. The quickest way to tell them apart is how they look and how they move when you disturb the leaf.

Notice that three of those four sit on the underside of the leaf. That is not a coincidence. The underside has a thinner surface layer, holds more humidity, and shields the bugs from direct sun and from predators. Because of that, flipping every leaf once a week is the single most useful habit for catching plant pests early.
Scale crawlers are worth knowing as a fifth option. They are pale mobile specks that later settle down and harden into brown bumps that no longer move at all. If the plant has fine webbing instead, check spider mites, since the adults are usually red or yellow-green rather than white.
Which mealybug is on your plant?
Mealybug is a family rather than a species, and four turn up on houseplants often enough to be worth telling apart. The differences change where you look and how you treat them.

The ground mealybug is the one people miss. A plant declining with no visible pest above the soil, and no obvious watering fault, is worth tipping out of its pot to check the root ball. White powdery masses on the roots confirm it.
For treatment, dab visible mealybugs with a cotton bud dipped in rubbing alcohol, leave it about a minute, then wipe away and rinse the leaf. Insecticidal soap works for larger infestations. The most effective habit of all is prevention: quarantine any new plant for one to two weeks before it joins the others, and check leaf undersides while it waits.
How to treat white bugs on plants
Indoor damp control does nothing for a plant pest, so plants need their own routine. The five steps below work for all four species, and the whole cycle usually takes two to three weeks.
- Name the bug first. Use the table above. Cottony means mealybugs, a rising cloud means whiteflies, fine webbing means spider mites, and smooth clusters on new growth mean aphids.
- Isolate the plant. Move it to another room, then check every plant that was standing near it. Whiteflies and aphids spread to neighbours quickly.
- Rinse before you treat. Spray the leaf undersides with lukewarm water in the sink, shower, or with a hose. This step alone removes a surprising number of them.
- Match the treatment to the species. Use rubbing alcohol on a cotton bud for mealybugs, insecticidal soap for aphids and whiteflies, and neem oil for spider mites. Always test one leaf first and wait a day, because some plants burn.
- Repeat every five to seven days. Eggs hatch in waves, so one treatment never finishes the job. Three or four rounds usually clear an infestation completely.
Apply neem oil in the evening rather than in bright sun, and skip it entirely above 32 °C (90 °F). Both precautions exist for the same reason: oil plus heat plus direct light scorches leaves.
Afterwards, four habits keep them from returning. Quarantine new plants for a week before they join the others. Wipe leaves monthly with a damp cloth, which lifts dust and early arrivals together. Avoid over-watering, since damp soil invites fungus gnats and weakens roots. Finally, keep the air moving, because a small fan reduces both fungus and mite problems.
The three white bugs worth acting on
Most of this page is reassurance. Three exceptions genuinely need attention, and they are easy to separate from the harmless majority.

Dust mites sit slightly apart. They cause no visible problem and cannot be eliminated, but they are a leading trigger for allergy and asthma. Hot washing of bedding, mattress covers, and lower humidity all reduce exposure.
How to get rid of tiny white bugs
Take away the moisture and the food, and most of these disappear without any treatment at all.
- Find the damp first. Check under sinks, behind toilets, around window frames, and along cold external walls. The bugs are downstream of the moisture.
- Get humidity to 50%. That is the figure university extension services give, and at 50% relative humidity a booklice population dies out in two to three weeks without any treatment. A cheap hygrometer tells you whether you are actually there.
- Discard infested food. Throw out any packet containing mites, then check every other opened item in the same cupboard, because they spread between packets.
- Store dry goods sealed. Glass or hard plastic with tight lids stops re-infestation permanently.
- Let plant soil dry out. Allow the top inch to dry fully between waterings, which removes springtails and fungus gnats together.
- Vacuum rather than spray. Insecticide does nothing about humidity, and these populations rebuild as long as the damp remains.
What to do if you rent and cannot fix the damp
Almost every guide on this topic assumes you own the building. Most people with booklice and mould mites do not. If the damp comes from failed ventilation, a leak behind a wall, or single-glazed windows in an old flat, none of the standard advice is something you can actually do.
Here is what still works from a tenancy, in rough order of effort.
- Buy a hygrometer first. They cost very little, and a written humidity reading turns “the flat feels damp” into evidence. Log it daily for a fortnight.
- Run a portable dehumidifier in the worst room. It treats the symptom rather than the cause, but at 50% relative humidity the bugs die out anyway.
- Leave internal doors open and pull furniture off external walls. Trapped air against a cold wall is where mould starts, and a 5 cm gap changes the surface temperature meaningfully.
- Dry laundry outside the flat if you possibly can. A single indoor load can release two litres of water into the air, which is often the whole difference.
- Report it in writing. Email rather than text or a phone call, describe the humidity readings, and keep the thread. In most jurisdictions a landlord has an obligation to keep a property habitable, and persistent damp from a building fault falls under that.
