Why does my photo give a low confidence score?
Almost always one of four things: the body is cropped, the light is harsh enough to blow out the markings, the shot is too far away to resolve texture, or there is no scale in the frame. Body proportions are the heaviest signal the model uses, so a photo missing legs or a cut-off abdomen loses more accuracy than a slightly soft focus does. Reshoot straight down, in indirect daylight, with a coin beside the bug.
Can I identify a dead bug from a picture?
Yes, and often better than a live one, because it holds still. The exception is a squashed specimen. Crushing destroys the body proportions the model depends on, so a flattened bug on tissue is frequently unidentifiable. Place it on plain white paper, shoot straight down, and include something for scale.
Does the identifier work on larvae, maggots, and caterpillars?
Partly. Caterpillars with distinctive markings identify well, and photographing the full length side-on matters because both ends look similar when cropped. Generic pale grubs and maggots are much harder, since many species are genuinely indistinguishable by eye at that stage even to an entomologist.
How close should I get to the bug?
Close enough to fill roughly a third of the frame, and no closer. Filling the entire frame usually crops the legs or antennae, which costs more accuracy than the extra detail gains. Use the phone's zoom rather than cropping afterwards, because cropping throws away the pixels the model needs.
Is it safe to photograph a spider up close?
Keep a sensible distance and never handle a spider to pose it. Use zoom instead of proximity. If you need the underside, which is the only way to see a black widow's hourglass, coax the spider into a clear glass or jar and photograph through the base. Never reach toward a spider you think may be a widow or a recluse.
