The angle that matters changes with the bug
Generic photo advice gets you most of the way. The last stretch depends on what you are photographing, because the deciding feature sits somewhere different on each group. Shoot the feature that settles the identification, not just the prettiest side of the insect.

What the identifier actually reads in your photo
Knowing what the model looks at explains why some photos work and others do not. It does not match your image against a library of pictures. It weighs several measurable features together. That is why a missing leg or a cropped abdomen costs more accuracy than a blurry background does.
- Body proportions. The ratio of head to thorax to abdomen, and how long the legs are relative to the body. This is the single heaviest signal, and it is what a cropped photo destroys.
- Leg count and arrangement. Six versus eight settles insect versus arachnid before anything else is considered.
- Wing state. None, one pair, two pairs, or hardened wing cases. Each points to a different order.
- Colour pattern and its layout. Not just the colour, but where the bands, spots, or stripes sit on the body.
- Surface texture. Smooth, hairy, waxy, or bristled. This is what separates a bed bug from a carpet beetle larva.
- Scale, when you give it one. A 2 mm bug and a 20 mm bug can look identical in a frame-filling photo. A coin removes the ambiguity entirely.
How to read the confidence score
Every result carries a confidence number, and it is worth taking seriously rather than skipping past. A low score is the tool telling you something useful, not failing.

Any tool that never admits doubt is worse than one that does, because a confident wrong answer about a brown recluse or a black widow is the kind of mistake that matters. So when the score is low on something that might be medically serious, treat it as unknown and keep your distance.
When photo identification will not work
Photo ID has real limits, and knowing them saves you from trusting a result you should not. These are the situations where no identifier, ours or anyone else’s, can give you a dependable answer.
- The bug is squashed. Proportions are the main signal, and crushing destroys them. A flattened specimen on paper is often unidentifiable.
- It is a larva or a nymph. Immature stages frequently look nothing like the adult, and many are simply not distinguishable by eye at all.
- The species needs a microscope. Some mites and small flies are separated by features under a millimetre. No phone camera resolves them.
- You photographed a bite instead of a bug. Skin reactions look alike across species. Start at bug bite identification instead.
