First, do you actually need to?
Worth asking, because the honest answer is often no. UC IPM says preventive measures handle carpenter bee damage under most conditions, and does not recommend insecticide. A single hole in a fence post or a shed door is cosmetic.
Carpenter bees (Xylocopa) are also native pollinators, and UC IPM classes them as beneficial. So the goal worth aiming at is usually not a dead bee. It is wood they cannot use. Paint, and why stain does not work
This is the correction worth reading twice. Plenty of guides suggest staining exposed timber to put bees off. Clemson Extension says plainly that wood stains provide little repelling action, and that a painted surface, oil based or polyurethane, is the most effective deterrent available.
The reason is mechanical rather than chemical. A stain soaks into the grain and leaves the surface much as it was. Paint lays a hard film across it, and the female has to chew through that film before she reaches anything worth tunnelling. Bare, weathered softwood is what she is looking for.
- Paint every exposed softwood surface, especially fascia, soffits, eaves, deck rails, and fence tops.
- Fill nail holes and saw cuts with putty or dowels, then paint over them. Clemson calls these out specifically.
- Insecticide-additive paints exist and may repel bees attempting to nest.
- Carpenter bees ignore vinyl siding entirely, and most hardwoods too.
Carpenter bee traps: how they work, and whether they do
A trap is a small wooden box with half inch holes drilled at an upward angle into the sides, and a clear bottle screwed into a larger hole underneath. A bee investigating the side hole finds a dark chamber, then heads for the brightest light, which is the bottle. It cannot find its way back out.
Do they work? Partly, and the honest framing matters. A trap catches females hunting for nest sites, so hanging traps in early spring near wood that was hit last year genuinely reduces new tunnelling. What a trap will not do is clear an established gallery, and it does nothing about bare wood, which is the underlying reason the bees are there at all. Clemson lists traps as an aid to monitoring and control, not as the answer.
Building one
Clemson describes the design, and it is a genuinely easy afternoon job. Take a raw, untreated or painted wooden box. Drill a half inch hole at an upward angle into two of the sides. Drill a larger hole in the bottom and twist a clear plastic bottle into it. Hang it near where the bees are active, ideally just above an existing hole.
The pheromone claim, examined
Trap sellers commonly state that a dead bee in the bottle releases a pheromone that pulls in more bees, and that a fuller trap therefore catches better. Product pages across this search repeat it as fact.
We could not find entomological support for it. Tracing the claim leads to patent filings and manufacturer copy rather than published research. One patent even notes the opposite concern, that a strong attractant risks drawing more insects toward the very structure you want to protect. Traps plainly do catch bees. Treat confident claims about corpses improving the catch as marketing until someone measures it.
Sprays and dusts, and why dust wins
For a tunnel that is already occupied, an insecticidal dust beats a liquid. Dust neither soaks into wood nor dries out, and it coats the walls the bee walks along. The female then spreads it through the gallery herself as she moves in and out. Apply it with a bellows duster, directed into the entrance hole.
UC IPM lists labelled options including pyrethrin, borate products such as disodium octaborate tetrahydrate, deltamethrin and cyfluthrin. Several are sold only to licensed applicators. Clemson notes that surface sprays of a synthetic pyrethroid such as permethrin do reduce activity. It puts their residual life on exterior surfaces at under 30 days, so lasting control needs repeat applications.
What “kills them instantly” really means
A direct hit with an aerosol wasp spray will kill a bee in front of you. It does nothing for the eggs sealed in the gallery, the tunnel itself, or next spring. So the search for something instant leads people to the least effective option. Dust is slow, unglamorous, and far more likely to solve the problem.
Timing, the part everyone gets wrong
Treat at the wrong point in the year and you will spend money for nothing. UC IPM is explicit: treating active nests in late spring and summer does little good. The female stocks each brood chamber with bee bread, a paste of pollen and nectar, then seals it behind wood particle partitions at both ends. Dust never reaches the developing bees, and they chew their way out later.

Sealing and repairing the holes

Puff an insecticidal dust labelled for bees or wasps straight into the entrance hole, using a bellows duster. Do it in late evening or after dark, when the bees are inside. Clemson Extension is specific about the timing, because a dust only works if the bee walks through it.
Wait before you seal
Give it about 24 hours, which is what Clemson recommends, or a day or two per UC IPM. The female has to return, contact the dust, and carry it into the gallery. Seal the entrance before that happens and she simply bores a new exit, which leaves you with two holes instead of one.
Plug the hole
Fill it with wood putty, caulk, or a wooden dowel cut to length and coated in exterior wood glue. Steel wool pushed in first gives the filler something to grip and makes reuse harder. Push the filler in rather than smearing it over the opening.
Sand it flush and prime it
Once cured, sand level with the surrounding wood. Bare filler and bare wood are both attractive to next year's bees, so priming matters as much as the plug itself.
Paint over the repair
Two coats of exterior paint, oil based or polyurethane. This step stops bees drilling the same board next spring, and it is the one people skip.
Why sealing too early backfires
This is the mistake that turns one hole into several. Plug an active tunnel and the bee inside does not politely die. She chews a fresh exit through the surrounding wood, so you have paid for filler and gained damage. Clemson makes the same point about untreated galleries: trapped adults simply excavate new openings.
The safe windows are simple. Seal after treating and waiting, or seal in autumn and winter once the gallery is genuinely empty.
Natural and non-chemical options
Searches for how to get rid of carpenter bees naturally run into a wall of citrus sprays and essential oils. The good news is that you are in a better position than most pest problems allow, because the single most effective measure here is not an insecticide at all.
- Paint and physical repair. The strongest option, and entirely non-lethal.
- Plug in winter. Filling an empty gallery harms nothing at all.
- Swap the material. Hardwood, pressure-treated timber, and vinyl are all ignored.
- Give them an alternative. An untreated softwood block sited away from the house draws nesting pressure off your fascia.
- Traps are chemical free, though they do kill what they catch.
Citrus and almond oil sprays get recommended constantly. We found no extension source supporting either, and any effect is short lived at best. They are not harmful to try, but do not expect them to replace paint.
What does not work
- Wood stain. Little repelling action, per Clemson. The most expensive myth on this list.
- Playing loud music at the nest. Appears on several listicles with nothing behind it.
- Plugging holes and hoping. Actively counterproductive on an occupied tunnel.
- One spray in May. Wrong season, and the residual is gone within a month anyway.
- Swatting the hovering male. He has no stinger and no nest. He is not the one drilling.
When to call a professional
Call someone when the galleries sit high on an upper floor, or when bees have worked a board for years and the tunnelling probably runs well beyond the visible hole. Structural damage is the other clear trigger. Access and safety drive that decision as much as chemistry. It also helps that only licensed applicators can buy several of the more effective dusts.
Stopping them coming back next year
Killing this year's bees and preventing next year's colonisation are two different jobs, and only the second one ends the problem. Because excavating fresh wood is costly, bees strongly prefer to reuse and extend existing tunnels. That is how galleries reach ten feet after years of reuse, and it is why an unrepaired hole is an invitation.
So the routine is short: repair and paint every hole once it is empty, keep exposed softwood painted, and hang a trap in early spring if last year was bad.
