Bed bug myths — what people get wrong

Bed bugs are surrounded by stubborn myths, partly because the resurgence is recent enough that most people grew up not seeing them. The myths below are the ones that cause the most preventable damage — they delay treatment, they encourage scattering DIY remedies, or they pin a public health issue on personal cleanliness.

Myth: “Bed bugs only infest dirty homes.

Truth: False. Bed bugs feed on blood, not crumbs. Clutter creates more hiding places, but cleanliness alone does not prevent infestation. Five-star hotels and hospitals report infestations every year, and the CDC and EPA both list bed bug infestation as a public health issue affecting homes at every income level.

Myth: “Bed bugs jump like fleas or fly like mosquitoes.

Truth: False. Bed bugs have six legs and no wings. They cannot jump or fly. They crawl about 1 m per minute on a smooth surface — slow enough to outrun by hand. Any insect that jumps when you reach for it on bedding is almost certainly a flea.

Myth: “Bed bugs are too small to see with the naked eye.

Truth: Partly false. Adults at 4–5 mm and late-stage nymphs at 3–4 mm are clearly visible. First-instar nymphs at 1.5 mm and eggs at 1 mm are visible but easy to miss — they look like grains of salt or specks of dust to the untrained eye.

Myth: “Cold winter weather will kill bed bugs in my apartment.

Truth: False. Bed bugs do die at sustained sub-zero temperatures (0 °F for 4 days), but indoor heating keeps your home well above that range. Even outdoor furniture brought inside often survives winter storage. Sustained heat (50 °C / 122 °F for 90 minutes) is the reliable kill, not cold.

Myth: “Bed bugs transmit serious diseases like fleas and mosquitoes do.

Truth: Generally false. The CDC has not linked bed bugs to disease transmission in humans. Their public health impact comes from skin reactions, sleep loss, anxiety, and secondary infections from scratching. Bed bug DNA can carry pathogens, but transmission to a human host has not been demonstrated in field studies.

Myth: “DIY foggers and bug bombs solve a bed bug problem.

Truth: False. EPA studies show foggers do not penetrate the deep harborage where bed bugs hide and frequently scatter the infestation into neighboring rooms. The University of Kentucky and Ohio State extension services both recommend against foggers for bed bug control.

Myth: “You can spot bed bugs by their bites — the bites are diagnostic.

Truth: False. Bed bug bites look like mosquito, flea, or chigger bites and vary widely from person to person. Roughly 30% of people show no reaction at all. Myth: “Pesticide-resistant 'super bed bugs' are immune to every treatment.

Truth: Partly false. Most modern bed bug populations are highly resistant to pyrethroid sprays (the active ingredient in most consumer products). They are not resistant to heat. Whole-room heat treatment at 50–60 °C still kills every life stage, which is why integrated pest management combines heat with rotating chemical classes.
