Brown recluse identification — quick visual answer
Brown recluse identification rests on three features working together. Any one feature alone produces frequent false positives, but the combination of all three is extremely reliable. The first is a dark violin marking on the cephalothorax (the front body section that carries the legs and eyes). The second is six eyes arranged in three pairs, called dyads — most US spiders have eight eyes, so a confirmed six-eye count narrows the field dramatically. The third is uniform tan to medium-brown color across the body and legs, with no banding, chevrons, or fishbone patterns. A spider that matches all three lives in the genus Loxosceles. A spider that matches only one or two is almost certainly something else.
Mature brown recluses are smaller than people expect — 6–12 mm in body length, with a legspan of about 1–1.5 inches. They are roughly the size of a US dime including the legs. If the spider you saw is bigger than your thumbnail, the odds are overwhelming that it is a wolf spider, a hobo spider, or a fishing spider. The violin marking — close-up identification
The violin marking is the most photographed brown recluse feature and also the most misread. The marking sits on top of the cephalothorax — the front body section between the head and the abdomen — and is always oriented the same way: the wide “body” of the violin faces the spider’s head and the narrow “neck” points back along the spine toward the abdomen. The marking is darker than the surrounding cephalothorax, usually a chocolate or coffee brown, and has clean edges with consistent color. A pattern that looks fuzzy, stripey, dotted, or made up of disconnected pieces is almost certainly a different species.
Violin contrast varies with age and recent molting. Juvenile recluses often show only the violin “neck” — a dark line along the rear of the cephalothorax — while the full shape develops gradually with each molt. Newly molted adults can also have a faded violin for a few days while the new exoskeleton hardens and darkens. The Mediterranean recluse (Loxosceles rufescens), which has spread into US urban buildings, sometimes shows a less-saturated violin than the native L. reclusa. Several harmless spiders carry false-violin markings — vague dark patches on the cephalothorax that look violin-shaped from certain angles. Six-eye arrangement (vs eight eyes)
The six-eye test is the single most reliable family-level identifier for any Loxosceles species. Nearly all common US spiders — including the black widow, wolf spider, jumping spider, hobo spider, and cellar spider — have eight eyes. Recluses have only six, arranged in three distinct pairs called dyads: one anterior pair facing forward, plus one lateral pair on each side of the cephalothorax. Viewed straight-on, the eyes look like three small dots in a curved row.
The catch is that recluse eyes are tiny — about 0.1 mm each — and difficult to see without macro photography or a hand lens. A standard phone camera at maximum zoom can resolve them on a still spider in good light. If you can’t see eyes clearly, fall back on the violin marking, body shape, and leg uniformity. Reports of “possible brown recluses” based on a violin marking alone are wrong most of the time; reports that confirm both the violin AND the six-eye dyads are correct most of the time. Brown recluse anatomy is unusually plain — and that plainness is itself a useful identification clue. Most common house spiders carry distinct patterns, stripes, or banding somewhere on the body. Legs (8 total)
Long, slender, hairless-looking, and uniform in color. Legspan reaches about 25–38 mm (1–1.5 inches). No banding, no fringe of dense hairs.

The two anatomical features that catch out identifiers most often are the legs and the abdomen. Recluse legs are long, slender, and smooth — no banding, no fringe of dense hairs, and roughly equal in length across all eight. Spiders with banded legs (wolf, hobo, sac spiders), or with two long forward legs much longer than the others (pirate spiders, sicariids in arid habitats), are not Loxosceles reclusa. The recluse abdomen is plain — a uniform tan, gray-brown, or pale brown with no visible pattern. Any chevron, fishbone, stripe, or speckled abdomen rules out a recluse immediately.
Brown recluse biology and life cycle
Brown recluses are slow-developing spiders. Females produce 1–5 papery cream-colored egg sacs over a 2–4 year lifetime, each sac containing 30–50 eggs. That is a low reproductive rate compared to most household spiders — common house spiders can produce hundreds of eggs per sac and several sacs per season. The trade-off for recluses is longer adult life: females routinely live 2–4 years and have been recorded surviving over a decade in laboratory conditions. Males mature slightly faster but live shorter adult lives, generally 1–2 years.

Hatchlings emerge from the sac after about a month and disperse on short silk drag lines (true ballooning is rare in this species). Juveniles take approximately one year to reach adulthood under typical indoor conditions, passing through six to seven molts. Each molt darkens the body slightly and clarifies the violin marking. Most indoor sightings labeled “small brown recluse” are sub-adults at the fourth or fifth molt — already venomous but slightly paler than mature adults. Recluse species in North America
Six Loxosceles species occur or have been recorded in the United States. The brown recluse (L. reclusa) is by far the most common and most medically significant in terms of bite frequency. The other species are either restricted to specific habitats (deserts, arid uplands) or are recent invasive arrivals (the Mediterranean recluse, L. rufescens, now found in urban buildings well outside the native US recluse range). All six produce sphingomyelinase D, the venom enzyme responsible for the necrotic skin reactions discussed below — but documented severe bites in the US almost always trace to L. reclusa.

The Mediterranean recluse (L. rufescens) deserves a separate mention. Originally native to the Mediterranean basin, it has been introduced into urban warehouse, museum, and apartment-building environments across the United States — including in states well outside the native L. reclusa range, such as New York, New Jersey, Illinois, California, and Florida. Most established US populations of L. rufescens are limited to single buildings or building complexes, not regional spreads. Bites from L. rufescens produce a clinical picture nearly identical to L. reclusa, so the treatment guidance in this article applies to both.
Geographic range — state by state
The native brown recluse range is well-defined and stable. Recluses are abundant across the south-central US — roughly bounded by southeast Nebraska on the northwest, southern Ohio on the northeast, north-central Texas on the southwest, and the Gulf Coast on the south. Inside this range, indoor populations are routine and bites are documented every year. Outside this range, established breeding populations are essentially absent — almost every “recluse” reported in California, the Pacific Northwest, the Northeast, Florida, or the Upper Midwest turns out, on examination, to be a different spider species.

The state-by-state status above reflects published entomology research from the University of Kentucky, the University of Arkansas, UC Riverside, and the American Arachnological Society. Where a state is listed as “not established,” isolated specimens have sometimes been intercepted through shipping or moving — but no self-sustaining wild population has been confirmed. Mediterranean recluse (L. rufescens) populations in some out-of-range cities are real but typically restricted to single buildings.
The brown recluse range expansion myth
The single biggest source of public confusion about brown recluses is the belief that they are spreading rapidly across the entire US. They are not. The native L. reclusa range has been mapped, re-mapped, and verified for over half a century. It has not expanded meaningfully. Yet residents of California, Oregon, Washington, Maine, Florida, and most of the Northeast continue to report “brown recluse sightings and bites” at high rates. Published research consistently shows two reasons for the disconnect: (1) look-alike spiders are misidentified, and (2) skin lesions are misdiagnosed.
On the spider side, the most-cited example is the multi-year California study led by Rick Vetter at UC Riverside. Researchers solicited specimens from concerned residents and put thousands of search hours into known indoor recluse habitats statewide. Across thousands of submitted “recluses,” not one was confirmed as the native brown recluse. The submitted specimens were wolf spiders, sac spiders, cellar spiders, woodlouse spiders, and assorted other tan-brown species. Similar studies in Oregon, Washington, Florida, and the Northeast have produced the same result.
On the medical side, lesions diagnosed as “brown recluse bites” in non-range states have repeatedly been re-evaluated and reclassified as community-acquired MRSA infections, allergic reactions, Lyme erythema migrans, herpes zoster, bacterial cellulitis, or other diagnoses entirely unrelated to spider bites. Modern emergency medicine recommends that physicians outside the recluse range avoid the “brown recluse bite” label unless a spider has actually been recovered and identified. If you live in California, Oregon, Washington, Maine, or upstate New York, the realistic answer is: you almost certainly do not have a brown recluse. Verify the spider before changing anything about your home.
Brown recluse webs and behavior
Brown recluses do build webs, but not the kind most people picture. There is no orb web, no funnel, no display structure. Instead, recluses spin a small, irregular, slightly sticky retreat web in a hidden spot — a corner of a cardboard box, the back of a picture frame, the crevice behind a hot-water heater, the inside surface of an old shoe. The retreat is a shelter, not a prey trap. Recluses are active hunters that leave the retreat at night to forage for crickets, cockroaches, beetles, and other small insects. They return to the same retreat by day and re-use it for weeks or months.
Behaviorally, recluses are reclusive (hence the name). They are slow-moving, nocturnal, and confrontation- averse. When disturbed, they retreat into the nearest crevice rather than standing their ground. They do not chase humans, do not jump, and do not display threat postures. Most documented recluse bites happen when a person presses against the spider in clothing, bedding, or stored objects — putting on a shoe, slipping into a shirt left on the floor, or rolling onto a recluse hiding in bedclothes. Unprovoked or aggressive bites are essentially absent from the documented case literature.
Where brown recluses live indoors
Recluses gravitate to dry, dark, undisturbed spaces with rough surfaces they can grip and crevices they can retreat into. Inside homes, that means storage zones and rarely-disturbed corners far more often than high-traffic living spaces. Less common than bed bugs, but possible — especially in spare bedrooms or guest rooms used infrequently.
The single most important harborage factor is cardboard. Corrugated cardboard offers exactly the dry, dark, narrow crevices recluses prefer, and storage boxes often go unmoved for years at a time. In a well-known Kansas study, researchers vacuumed over 2,000 recluses out of a single home — and the heaviest concentration was in cardboard boxes stored in an attic. Swapping cardboard for sealed plastic bins is the single most effective amateur intervention for established indoor populations, often outperforming chemical treatment alone.
Brown recluse venom — sphingomyelinase D
Brown recluse venom is a complex mixture, but the medically critical component is an enzyme called sphingomyelinase D (SMase D), sometimes also referred to as the dermonecrotic toxin. SMase D is largely unique to the Sicariidae family (recluses and their close relatives) and is responsible for nearly all the tissue damage seen in cutaneous loxoscelism. Its mechanism is well-characterized: the enzyme cleaves sphingomyelin in cell membranes, generating ceramide-1-phosphate and triggering a cascade that includes membrane disruption, complement activation, neutrophil recruitment, vascular thrombosis at the bite site, and progressive local cell death.
That mechanism explains the most distinctive feature of recluse bites: the gradual, hours-to-days spread of a necrotic lesion. Unlike snake or widow venoms — which act within minutes — sphingomyelinase D works slowly, with peak local tissue damage typically not visible until 24–72 hours after envenomation. The mechanism also explains why only a small percentage of bites cause severe necrosis. Effective enzyme delivery depends on bite depth, venom load, and host immune response. Many recluse bites involve minimal venom injection — a quick defensive nip rather than a sustained envenomating bite — and produce nothing more than a mosquito-bite-like reaction. Brown recluse bite progression — hour by hour
Knowing what a recluse bite looks like at each stage helps patients decide when to seek medical care and helps doctors recognize cutaneous loxoscelism even when the spider isn’t available for confirmation. The timeline below covers a typical bite that does progress toward necrosis. Most recluse bites — about 90% — never reach the later stages. Mild bites resolve as local redness and minor swelling within a few days. The 10% that do progress show the staged pattern below.

Two clinical patterns are worth flagging. First, the bull’s-eye lesion — a central darkening surrounded by a pale ring and an outer red ring — is often described as the “classic” recluse bite, but it actually appears in only a minority of cases and is not specific to recluse bites. Lyme disease (erythema migrans), some bacterial infections, and certain allergic reactions can all produce similar rings. Second, the initial bite is usually unnoticed: many patients only realize they were bitten when local pain develops several hours later. Loxoscelism — the clinical syndrome
Loxoscelism is the medical term for the clinical syndrome produced by Loxosceles envenomation. It has two forms. Cutaneous loxoscelism is the local skin reaction — pain, redness, blistering, and in roughly 10% of confirmed bites, a slowly developing necrotic ulcer that may take weeks to months to heal. Systemic loxoscelism is the rare but more dangerous form — under 1% of confirmed bites — involving fever, malaise, rash, intravascular hemolysis (red blood cell breakdown), and in severe cases acute kidney injury. Systemic loxoscelism is most often seen in children and patients with smaller body mass relative to the venom dose received.
The clinical picture matters because treatment differs by form. Cutaneous loxoscelism is managed with wound care, pain control, monitoring for secondary infection, and — for established eschars — eventual surgical debridement once the lesion is fully demarcated (typically 2+ weeks post-bite). Early aggressive surgery is no longer recommended. Systemic loxoscelism requires inpatient evaluation with serial complete blood counts, monitoring of urine for hemoglobinuria, and assessment of renal function. Bite treatment and first aid

The single biggest preventable mistake is applying heat to the bite — heat speeds local venom diffusion and worsens tissue damage. The second is delaying medical evaluation because the bite “looks fine” in the first few hours; loxoscelism develops over days, not minutes, so an early-looking benign bite can still progress.
