Five real signs of bed bugs
These are the signs that actually mean bed bugs — not the ones that just look scary on the internet.
- Live bugs in the seams of the mattress or box spring.
- Small reddish-brown stains on sheets (squashed fed bugs).
- Tiny black dots in seam lines (their droppings).
- Bites in a line of 2–5, mostly on arms or shoulders.
- A sweet, slightly musty smell in a heavy infestation.
The plan
Start with prep — pest treatments work much better on a prepared room.
- Wash all bedding, throws, and clothes from the bedroom at 60 °C / 140 °F.
- Dry on high heat for 30 minutes.
- Vacuum mattress seams, headboard, baseboards, and the inside of drawers.
- Encase the mattress and box spring in a bed-bug-proof cover.
- Call a licensed pest control company for confirmation and treatment.
